Title: “If Not Now, When? Achieving Equality for Women Attorneys in the Courtroom and in ADR.:

Date: Thursday, Feb. 22nd

Location: Paul Hastings (200 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10166)

Description:

Please join Women in eDiscovery’s NYC Chapter as we host our CLE-eligible February topic, “If Not Now, When? Achieving Equality For Women Attorneys In The Courtroom And In Alternative Dispute Resolution.” During the meeting, we will also focus our charity initiatives on collecting donations for Bottomless Closet.

With the full support and commitment of the Commercial & Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association’s leadership, these female alumnae chairs met and formed an ad hoc task force devoted to the issue of the apparent dearth of women litigators in the courtroom and women who serve as arbitrators and mediators in complex commercial and international arbitrations and mediations. Based on the survey results, the task force found continued disparity and gender imbalance in the courtroom and ADR cases. (http://www.nysba.org/WomensTaskForceReport/)

Susan Hernandez, Esq. is a mediator and arbitrator for NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation). Susan was voted the #1 Mediator in New York State in the 2017 New York Law Journal Reader Rankings Survey and has been ranked a Top Ten Mediator for the last 3 years (2015 - 2017). She was also named a Top 10 Arbitrator in the 2016 survey. In this CLE program, Susan will share her personal experiences as a woman and a minority in the courtroom and ADR. She will lead an engaging interactive discussion on how we can move the needle with the support of law firms, in-house counsel, outside-counsel and legal service provides to establish procedures and policies to increase the appointment of women and minorities as hearing officers in complex commercial ADR cases.

Experienced attorneys will receive 1.0 CLE credit in Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias. Newly admitted attorneys will receive 1.0 CLE credit in Ethics and Professionalism.

Lunch will be sponsored by NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation).

Space will be sponsored by Paul Hastings.

We will be collecting Interview and Work-Appropriate Items to donate to Bottomless Closet (www.bottomlessclosetnyc.org) on behalf of WiE NYC Chapter. Donations can include: handbags; shoes; clothing; new hosiery, new undergarments; winter and trench coats.
